Excommunication in Texas: Priest Called Francis and Leo XIV "Usurpers"

The Vatican (Cardinal Tucho Fernández) has removed from the priesthood a San Antonio priest for publicly referring to Francis and Leo XIV as "usurpers".

Fr. John Mary Foster founded the Mission of Divine Mercy in 2001, a small Catholic community in the Texas Hill Country. He was incardinated into the Archdiocese of San Antonio in November 2009.

In April 2026, a canonical tribunal found Foster guilty of schism, meaning refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff. The archdiocesan notice specifically describes this as “a crime against the faith.”

The tribunal held that Foster had incurred latae sententiae excommunication and dismissed him from the clerical state. The sentence was publicly announced by Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, 69, of San Antonio on August 14, 2026.

The trial

The judicial process was authorized by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. The tribunal consisted of three judges, a notary, a promoter of justice, and an advocate for Foster. The three judges were priests holding doctorates in canon law. The archbishop says their regular ministries were independent of the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

The tribunal spent more than a year receiving and considering evidence.

The evidence included Foster's statements, homilies, teachings and actions, together with testimony from witnesses.

The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith was notified about the April sentence and acknowledged the tribunal's judicial authority to render the sentence.

The central dispute concerns Foster's rejection of the legitimacy of the recent popes.

No Mentioning of the pope in the Eucharist

Foster has publicly called both popes Francis and Leo XIV “usurpers.”

The archbishop says he had 2024 prohibited Foster from publicly celebrating Eucharists, but Foster continued doing so.

According to García-Siller, Foster deliberately omitted the reigning pope's name from the Eucharistic Prayer - first Francis, and subsequently Leo XIV.

Alleged Messages from God the Father

The archbishop says Foster and the Mission of Divine Mercy have published alleged messages from God, Jesus, and the Blessed Mother, received by a member of the community, Sister Amapola.

The messages reportedly maintain that Francis and Leo XIV were not the legitimate popes.

One alleged revelation, dated September 2, 2025 and attributed to God the Father, states: “The one who is seated on the throne of Peter is not Mine.”

An earlier message concerning Francis reportedly accused the bishops of allowing “the usurper to sit on the chair of My Peter.”

He may be joining the ranks of saints in the Church to whom such an 'honor' was also mistakenly, and briefly, been bestowed. May our Lord guide him in his time of trial.

The Words of Jesus:
All sins, in the Eyes of God, will be deemed acceptable by this new inclusive-Church. Any one who dares to challenge him will be sought out and punished. Those priests, bishops and cardinals who oppose him will be excommunicated and stripped of their titles. Others will be bullied and persecuted with many priests having to go into hiding.
To those poor sacred servants of Mine who recognise My Voice now, please hear Me as I reach out to you to bring you comfort. You have been given the responsibility to testify on My behalf in order to save the souls of those whom you instruct and guide.
All you can do is trust in Me and continue to serve Me. What you must not do is to accept any doctrine presented to you and which you will know, instantly, is not in accordance with My Teachings. You must do what your heart tells you, but know this. This period is going to cause you deep pain and the raw grief you will experience when you see how My Church will be desecrated will leave you weeping. But you must recognize the lies which are to be presented to you for what they are – an affront to My death on the Cross.

I must commend the coherency not only of the messages but also of his disposition. The earnest witness is endearing. Please God all will be well. They are plainly not schismatic.

Obeying God when man contradicts God.

For an established Novus Ordo Priest to call the Francis and Leo “usurpers” he would have to be absolutely convinced the message came from Heaven. If he were a traditional priest it would be less convincing.

Prevost-Bergoglio, enemies of the Truth, only excommunicate those who speak it.

DefendTruth shares this

The Archdiocese of San Antonio has officially excommunicated and dismissed Father John Mary Foster, founder of the Mission of Divine Mercy, from the clerical state for schism. He rejected the legitimacy of Pope Leo XIV, calling him a usurper, and published unapproved private revelations.

Possibly in a couple of more years, all faithful Catholics will be excommunicated.
