For many years, faithful Catholics have endured a disturbing pro-LGBT turn in many of their churches. But lately, in some places, that has gone completely overboard. And many Catholics have had enough of it. The Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego is the most “LGBTQ+” area in town. One would hope that the most prominent Catholic Church there, St. John the Evangelist, would be a beacon of light and truth on that issue. But sadly, it has gone in the other direction. Throughout San Diego County, July 11-19 has been designated as “San Diego Pride Week” by the various LGBT organizations – with the Hillcrest neighborhood being the center of activities. As part of that, the St. John the Evangelist Church advertised that it would have an LGBT-themed “All Are Welcome Mass” on Sunday, July 12. When our MassResistance Catholic leaders in San Diego saw that promotion, they contacted us. On two occasions I started Windswept House but gave up on the book each time because of Martin’s long-winded prose. I found it off-putting. The book is massive, a 646 page tome. As a writer I value economy of words and prefer authors who get straight to the point. Even so, Martin is too important a thinker to dismiss simply because one disapproves of his verbosity. On my third attempt I persisted for two hundred pages, at which point the manuscript caught fire in my hands. Although I ultimately found the book uneven—stretches of it are tedious—before the end I knew, or thought I knew, what had compelled Father Martin to write it. Windswept House is a labor of love. Luc Terlinden, has defended opening a debate on the ordination of married men in the Latin Church after taking part as a guest at the General Synod of the Church of England, held in York from 10 to 12 July. In an interview given to the Dutch daily Nederlands Dagblad, the prelate stated that “married priests would be an enrichment for the Church” and recalled that the Belgian episcopate had already forwarded this proposal to Rome during the 2023 Synod on Synodality. The TLM and the Four Last Things
I recently attended the funeral of a young man who died tragically. It happened to be a solemn high Traditional Latin Mass, entirely licit and even affirmed by the presence of our local bishop, his retired predecessor, and a couple dozen priests. That liturgy, however, was – all extraneous considerations aside – definitely not something to be reduced to the controversies surrounding the recent SSPX consecrations, the back and forth about Traditionis custodes (Pope Francis’ sharp curtailing of the TLM), or the short- and long-term fallout of Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Vatican II document on liturgy). It was all directed towards prayer for the eternal destiny of the young man’s soul and the souls of us all, which – sad to say – seem to get scant attention in the Church today, even at funerals. It was a deeply moving experience, and it got me thinking, afterwards, as to why modern funerals so often are not. There’s been a massive shift in the Church towards what are often even called …
Let us all pray that we will be given the grace to have such a mass said for us when we die.
The TLM Requiem Mass is one of the most inspirational liturgical functions of the Catholic Church. Hopefully with its increase, more souls will return to Holy Mother Church.
