UK

Cardinal George Pell of Sydney, Australia has called for a Church investigation of conditions in the Legion of Christ following the revelations that the group's founder, Father Marcial Maciel, led a double life. Speaking at Oxford, the Australian prelate said that it was "not entirely reasonable" to expect Legion officials to answer questions about their own order. According to the Cardinal one critical question would be "to what extent there was a cover-up." Cardinal Pell said the investigation should be undertaken by Church authorities outside the Legion.
