Yesterday, the Holy See announced that the Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson, Bishop of the Diocese of Saginaw, MI, has been chosen to succeed Archbishop Raymond L. Burke as new head of the archdiocese of Saint Louis. Carlson is a canon lawyer. He has been outspoken in his defense of human life. His Excellency's episcopal motto is "Ante crucem nihil defensionis," or "Before the cross there is no defense."

On April 17, Bishop Michael Burbidge of Raleigh visited Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dunn to confer the Sacrament of Confirmation on twenty-one candidates in the Extraordinary Form, the blogspot “In Caritate Non Ficta” reports. The bishop has been extremely supportive of the Old Rite since his installation in 2006.

Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Holy See Press Office, asked for “an immediate and unambiguous denial” of a “completely untrue” April 20 London Times article. According to the article, Pope Benedict intended to give Prince Charles a facsimile of the 1530 English request for King Henry VIII’s annullment from Catherine of Aragon. Richard Owen of the Times wrote a revised story that appeared in the April 21 edition.

On April 19, Bishop Frank J. Dewane of the Diocese of Venice in Florida Dedicated Christ the King Church in Sarasota, the first church in Florida which will administer the Sacraments exclusively according to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. Over 400 people were on hand for the Dedication-- and the Mass in the Presence of a mitred Bishop. The celebrant was Father James Fryar. The choir included many members of the Ave Maria University Schola. This was, the ‘highest’ Extraordinary Form Mass in over 40 years in the state of Florida, the participants reported.
