Will Archbishop Dolan Mediate?

USA

Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York has volunteered to act as a mediator in a bitter debate over plans to build a mosque near the "Ground Zero" site of the 9/11 terrorist attack. The archbishop said that he was hoping for a compromise between advocates and opponents of the project. Speaking during a news conference, Archbishop Dolan invoked the example of Pope John Paul II. In 1993 he ordered Carmelite nuns to move from their convent at the former Auschwitz death camp after protests from Jews. Suggesting a similar option for New York, Archbishop Dolan said: “It worked there; might work here.”

Wonderful Vocational Development

Austria

On 16 August 2010, Auxiliary Bishop Franz Lackner of Graz-Seckau ordained four monks of the Austrian Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz. On the Sunday before the ordinations, seven monks have made their perpetual vows. Yesterday at First Vespers of the feast of St. Bernard, seven new novices were clothed. This is part of a wonderful vocational development at Heiligenkreuz, the New Liturgical movement comments. Counting all monks and novices, there are as of today 88 Cistercians at Heiligenkreuz.

Cardinal Stands By His Suggestion

Mexico

Mexico City’s Mayor Marcelo Ebrard has fulfilled a threat to file a lawsuit against Cardinal Juan Sandoval Iniguez, after the cardinal refused to apologize for his suggestion that Mexican judges had been given inducements to approve a law allowing same-sex marriage. A spokesman for Archdiocese of Guadalajara said that Cardinal Sandoval stands by his charge that supreme court judges were “fed” by leftist political leaders. He added that the prelate had “specific” evidence for his charge.

Not Just Political Calculation

Canada

Bishops “need spiritual discernment and not just political calculation of the risk of the possibility of the message being received,” said Cardinal Marc Ouellet, the newly-appointed prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for Bishops. “We have to dare to speak to the deep heart, where the Spirit of the Lord is touching people beyond what we can calculate,” said Ouellet in an interview with Canadian Catholic News.
