Following the beginning of the World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance in Geneva on Monday, the Russian Orthodox Church has asked the conference to introduce the idea of “Christianophobia” into international laws concerning discrimination, Archpriest Georgy Ryabykh, deputy head of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations, told Interfax-Religion. “At the conference’s opening ceremony, the archpriest said, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon mentioned anti-Semitism and Islamophobia but did not “say a single word about Christianophobia.”

On Thursday morning, Pope Benedict XVI addressed representatives of the Pontifical Biblical Commission following their plenary assembly. The Holy Father said that a correct understanding of Scripture does not come from "the individualistic illusion that biblical texts can be better understood outside the community of believers" but rather rises from the Tradition of the Church.

Pope Pius XII told his surrounding that should he be arrested by the Nazis, his resignation would become effective immediately, paving the way for a successor, according to documents in the Vatican's Secret Archives. Parts of the Roman Curia were then expected to flee to a safe country – probably neutral Portugal – where they would re-establish the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church and elect a new Pontiff. That Hitler considered kidnapping the Pope has been documented before. But this is the first time that details have emerged of the Vatican's strategy should the Nazis carry out the plan. This was reported by Father Peter Gumpel, the German Jesuit priest who is the postulator of the cause of Pius XII.

Co-Operation Between the Holy See and the League of Arab States

On Thursday 23 April, in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican, a Memorandum of Understanding between the Secretariat of State and the League of Arab States was signed. The Agreement consolidates the bonds of co-operation that exist between the Holy See and the League of Arab States, especially on the political and cultural levels, in favour of peace, security, and regional and international stability. Moreover, it proposes instruments of consultation between the two Parties, giving attention also to initiatives of inter-religious dialogue.
