He was appointed by Pope Leo XIV on May 1. The numbers: Of 268 active U.S. bishops, five (2%) are Black. Black Americans make up 2% of U.S. Catholics and, over the past 20 years, about 2% of U.S. priestly ordinations.

Brazilian Bishop believes in "Goddess" and embraces "all sexual diversity": Bishop José Valdeci Santos Mendes, 64, of Brejo, Maranhão, presided over a Eucharist at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Conception on September 7, Brazil’s Independence Day. After Communion and before the final blessing, two young men recited the “Creed of the Youth of the Ecclesial Base Communities.” Developed in 2016, the text speaks of a “God/Goddess,” described as “liberating and revolutionary.” This creed explicitly rejects belief in a “hierarchical Church” while “embracing all sexual diversity.” Before the recitation, Bishop Mendes introduced the creed as a “supplication from the youth of Latin America, who stand before God asking him to come to meet us.”
A heterodox creed invoking a “God/Goddess” and featuring left-wing political language was recited at the annual “Cry of the Excluded” Mass celebrated by Bishop José Valdeci Santos Mendes of Brejo, Brazil.

Leo XIV has accepted the early resignation of Bishop Guido Gallese, 64, of Alessandria, Northern Italy, today. Bishop Luigi Testore of neighboring Acqui is the new apostolic administrator. Monsignor Gallese was appointed as Ecclesiastical Assistant to the National Association of Shrines by the Dicastery for Evangelisation. Gallese’s resignation comes eight months after an apostolic visitation by Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello. No report from Bertello’s visitation was published. The Euthanasia Bill in Britain is defeated, for now. The House of Commons has rejected the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, defeating the latest attempt to legalize assisted suicide in England and Wales. MPs voted 286 to 270 against the legislation at its second reading. This is a decisive reversal that ends the bill’s progress through Parliament. Had it passed, the law would have allowed terminally ill adults with a life expectancy of less than six months to receive “assistance” in ending their lives under “specified conditions.” Opposition came from far beyond religious and pro-life circles. Doctors, disability advocates, legal experts, and others warned that vulnerable people could face subtle pressure or coercion, while serious concerns remained about safeguards and the state of Britain’s palliative and hospice care. Emma Bonino has died aged 78. May God have mercy on her soul. She was one of the most consequential figures in modern Italian politics, and Catholics should be honest about what that legacy means. She devoted much of her public life to causes fundamentally opposed to Catholic moral teaching, most notably the legalisation and promotion of abortion. She became a principal architect of Italy’s transformation from an overwhelmingly Catholic culture into a far more secular one. That makes Pope Francis’s repeated warmth towards her, including his extraordinary description of Bonino as one of Italy’s “forgotten greats”, all the more difficult to understand.

Although she was not a medical professional, Bonino, according to her own testimony, performed over 10,000 illegal abortions. She is one of the most sinister figures in the history of Italy.
