As part of a paid visitor route, the project will create a new external walkway around the dome, while former storage rooms are being converted into exhibition spaces, further commercialising St Peter's Basilica. The project's costs are undisclosed. The contractor is Lunghi Srl of Assisi, which is noteworthy because Cardinal Mauro Gambetti also hails from Assisi. There is currently no evidence of favouritism or wrongdoing beyond this geographical connection.
