「このような集まりを開くこともありました。しかし、秘密警察の検問があったため、窓やドアを閉めなければならず、司祭たちを隠さなければならなかったのです。」
同司教は、ギリシャ・カトリック教会の地下教会の司教であったアレクサンドル・チラ司教（1897-1983）の物語を語りました。ソ連当局はチラ司教に対し、「キリストを否定するのではなく、正教会に改宗するだけ」と迫り、それによってローマとの交わりを断つよう求めたのです。
「彼はこれを拒否しました」とシュナイダー司教は述べ、その結果、彼は「グラーグと呼ばれるいくつかの強制収容所」に投獄されました。
その後、チラ司教はカラガンダで自宅軟禁下に置かれ、送還されるのを避けるため、司教としての身分を隠していました。「彼は司教としての身分を明かすことはできませんでした」とシュナイダー司教は語りました。「そうしなければ、送還されてしまうからです。ですから、人々に『私はアレクサンドル神父です』としか言えなかったのです。」
カトリックの司祭たちは、絶え間ない制限の下、民家でミサを執り行いました。
信徒のコミュニティが拡大するにつれ、彼らは教会建設の許可を求めました。しかし、共産党当局はこれを拒否しました。「それは不可能です。ここは共産主義で無神論の社会です。教会を建てることはできません。」許可が下りたのは、地元のドイツ人カトリック信者たちが、許可が下りなければドイツへ移住すると警告してからでした。
当局は、教会が普通のホールのように見えることを要求し、その高さを制限しました。信者たちはこれに対し、地下へ掘り進めることで対応し、「天井のフレスコ画、金箔、側祭壇――本当に美しく、深い愛情が込められた」広々とした地下教会を作り上げました。
完成した際、信者たちは、自分たちの間にカトリックの司教はもはやいないと信じていたため、誰がこの教会を奉献できるのかと戸惑いました。1980年6月29日、アレクサンダー神父が司教の法衣を身にまとって現れ、初めてその正体を明かしました。
