Pope Leo XIV has granted a special Guadalupano Jubilee Year at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, offering Catholics an extraordinary opportunity for pilgrimage, prayer, conversion and spiritual renewal. The Jubilee will begin on October 12, 2026, and continue until October 12, 2027, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the new Basilica of Santa María de Guadalupe and the transfer of the sacred image of Our Lady of Guadalupe to its present sanctuary on October 12, 1976. The opening also coincides with the 131st anniversary of the Pontifical Coronation of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, Archbishop Primate of Mexico, announced the Jubilee with gratitude and invited Catholics to gather at the Basilica for the solemn opening Mass at noon on October 12. During the Jubilee Year, Catholics who devoutly visit the Basilica with a contrite heart, participate in a liturgical celebration or spend time in prayer may obtain a plenary indulgence. The usual conditions established by the Church must also be fulfilled: sacramental Confession, reception of Holy Communion, profession of the Creed and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father. The indulgence may be obtained for oneself or offered for the souls in Purgatory. The Jubilee celebrations begin on October 11 with Solemn Lauds, Mass and Vespers. On October 12, the Basilica will begin the day with morning prayer and Mass, followed by a video commemorating the dedication of the new Basilica and the historic transfer of the sacred image. At noon, Cardinal Aguiar Retes will preside over the traditional Mass of the Roses and the opening of the Holy Door, formally inaugurating the Jubilee Year. The celebrations will continue with the Archdiocesan Rosary, a commemorative concert marking the Basilica’s 50th anniversary and the Rosary of Guadalupano Love. The Jubilee recalls the centuries-old story of devotion at Tepeyac, where, according to the traditional Guadalupan account recorded in the Nican Mopohua, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego and asked that a church be built where people could encounter her maternal care. As the Catholic Church moves toward the 500th anniversary of the Guadalupe apparitions in 2031, this Jubilee offers millions of pilgrims another invitation to reconciliation, conversion and a deeper encounter with Jesus Christ through Mary.
