After more than four centuries, the Dominicans have left the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Las Caldas de Besaya in Cantabria, Spain.
Last Sunday, the Dominicans formally entrusted the sanctuary to the Diocese of Santander.
The church will remain a place of worship. The property continues to belong to the Dominicans. But the resident Dominican community - once one of the Order’s important houses in Spain - has come to an end.
The scale of the change is captured by Fr. Francisco García Ortega OP, the last superior of the community.
He entered the Dominican Order at Las Caldas 55 years ago, aged 17. At the time, the sanctuary housed Dominican philosophical studies.
“We were more than 200 friars, and now we are only two,” García Ortega told DiocesisDeSantander.com. Those two are García Ortega and Fr. Fernando Serrano Pérez OP, who has served at Las Caldas for about 30 years.

On September 21, Pope Leo XIV has promoted Monsignor Jorge Carlos Patrón Wong as Archbishop of Puebla de los Ángeles, Mexico.
He was born on January 3, 1958, in Mérida, Archdiocese of Yucatán and ordained a priest on January 12, 1988, for that Archdiocese.
In 2009, he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Papantla and received episcopal ordination in December. On May 2, 2012, he became diocesan bishop of Papantla.

The pro-life organization Aid to Women has been operating in the GTA for over 40 years counselling abortion-minded women to choose life for themselves and their babies. They encourage those women by pledging to support them and their babies the first two years of their child’s life with everything from diapers, clothing, car seats, strollers, food and much, much more. Aid to Women will be conducting a Baby Bottle for Life fund raising campaign at all weekend Masses on September 19 and 20. They will be handing out empty baby bottles and asking you to take them home and fill them with coins, bills and cheques and return the filled bottles at all the Masses on October 17 and 18.
