Italian priest Don Leonardo Pompei was declared excommunicated for schism on September 11 by the Diocese of Latina. The decision follows a penal process conducted under a mandate from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. The key issue is reflected in Pompei’s own words. After Communion and before the final blessing, two young men recited the “Creed of the Youth of the Ecclesial Base Communities.” Developed in 2016, the text speaks of a “God/Goddess,” described as “liberating and revolutionary.” This creed explicitly rejects belief in a “hierarchical Church” while “embracing all sexual diversity.” Before the recitation, Bishop Mendes introduced the creed as a “supplication from the youth of Latin America, who stand before God asking him to come to meet us.”

The House of Commons has rejected the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, defeating the latest attempt to legalize assisted suicide in England and Wales. MPs voted 286 to 270 against the legislation at its second reading. This is a decisive reversal that ends the bill’s progress through Parliament. Had it passed, the law would have allowed terminally ill adults with a life expectancy of less than six months to receive “assistance” in ending their lives under “specified conditions.” Opposition came from far beyond religious and pro-life circles. Doctors, disability advocates, legal experts, and others warned that vulnerable people could face subtle pressure or coercion, while serious concerns remained about safeguards and the state of Britain’s palliative and hospice care. An interesting exchange here between William F. Buckley Jr. and Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen from 1970, where the good Bishop’s answers sound incredibly contemporary and not entirely satisfactory. Almost as if the Church has been in stasis for 50 years.
In 1970 there was much optimism about Vat II among many clerics. The mass exodus of priests and religious had barely begun. Ditto the great exodus of the laity. Thus, Sheen's optimism is not surprising. In 1970 99% of clerics were talking as if the Vat II documents had floated down from heaven. The first high level cleric who spoke publicly about flaws in Vat II was Cardinal Ratzinger.
Msgr. Roger Landry, 55, a prominent conservative U.S. priest, has been restricted from public ministry following non-sexual misconduct allegations by “multiple individuals.” The Diocese of Fall River said on September 11 that the allegations involve adults and possible violations of priestly codes of conduct in both Fall River and the Archdiocese of New York. After an initial investigation in New York, the diocese said there was “sufficient evidence” to impose restrictions while the case continues. Landry, who has also celebrated the traditional Roman Rite, denies wrongdoing. He says the accusations essentially concern alleged boundary violations between spiritual direction and friendship.

Israeli Settler Who Attacked French Catholic Nun Acquitted The Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court has acquitted Yona Simcha Schreiber, 36, of criminal responsibility for a violent attack on a French Catholic nun in April. The court accepted psychiatric evidence that he was psychotic at the time of the assault. He could neither understand the nature of his actions nor control them, the court ruled. He was ordered to undergo compulsory psychiatric hospitalization for up to six years. The attack occurred on Mount Zion, near King David’s Tomb outside Jerusalem’s Old City. Security footage showed Schreiber running toward the 48-year-old nun from behind and knocking her violently to the ground, causing her head to strike the stone pavement. Schreiber initially walked away before returning and kicking the nun while she remained on the ground. He also assaulted a passerby who attempted to intervene.
