Every day brings surprising news that turns our previous worldview upside down. When the USSR collapsed—quite deservedly—more than three decades ago, its rival, the United States, remained the sole superpower. The United States based its power on its undisputed military strength as well as on the widespread acceptance of the dollar as the currency for all major international transactions. The dollar is losing its leading role. No wonder—with debt so high that the U.S. government has to take on new debt just to pay the interest on that debt. Get high with a little help from my friends – sang Joe Cocker at Woodstock in 1969. Today, this advice is more relevant than ever. When a “friend” pushes you into an …

Bank of Credit and Commerce International - … In 1982, 15 Middle Eastern investors bought Financial General Bankshares, a large bank holding company headquartered in Washington, D.C. All the investors were BCCI clients, but the Fed received assurances that BCCI would be in no way involved in the management of the company, which was renamed First American Bankshares. To alleviate regulators' concerns, Clark Clifford, an adviser to five presidents, was named First American's chairman. Clifford headed a board composed of himself and several other distinguished American citizens, including former United States SenatorStuart Symington. In truth, BCCI had been involved in the purchase of FGB/First American from the beginning. Abedi had been approached about buying it as early as 1977, but by this time BCCI's reputation in the United States was so poor that it could not hope to buy an American bank on its own (as mentioned above, the OCC was adamantly opposed to BCCI's being allowed to …More

Austrian-born emeritus Amazon bishop Erwin Kräutler told Kath.ch on March 27 that Pope Francis may have refrained from abolishing celibacy due to external pressure. He believes Francis was open to the idea at the 2019 Amazon Synod but ultimately did not adopt it in the 2020 document Querida Amazonia: "That makes me wonder: who is responsible for this rift?" Kräutler said, suggesting outside influence. The Amazon Bishop reveals that Francis "was put under such pressure that he could no longer do otherwise psychologically and personally, and didn’t dare allow the ordination of married men as priests," despite previously encouraging "bold proposals". Monsignor Kräutler added that the Amazon bishops had hoped for female priests, too. Many communities in the Amazon are "already" led by women. In his religion, the ordination of women is a matter of church law that could be changed with a single signature. Kräutler served as Prelate of Xingu in Brazil from 1981 to 2015 and helped prepare the …More

Noelia Castillo Ramos, 25, was killed on March 26 at the Catholic-owned Residència Sant Camil hospital in Sant Pere de Ribes. She was taken into state custody at age 13, separated from her parents, and became the victim of a gang rape by immigrants. In 2022, she jumped from a fifth-floor window. She survived, but was left paraplegic. In 2024, she requested assisted suicide. Her father opposed the decision in court, but ultimately lost. Following her death, he released videos showing that she had begun to stand up again and rediscover hope (video below). The lawyer has alleged that the hospital expedited her death because her organs had already been allocated to other patients. The killing procedure – ultimately done by organ harvesting - was carried out in her hospital room at Sant Camil. Sant Camil Hospital was founded by the Camillian religious order. It is currently publicly managed within Catalonia’s healthcare system. However, it remains under religious ownership and continues to …More
USS Gerald R. Ford ‘out of action’ — ex-Indian general The Iran war is effectively over for the damaged USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, retired Indian Major General Gagan Deep Bakshi said. The warship is “out of the combat area” and will soon head back to the US, he added — meaning the carrier’s 70 deck-based fighter jets are effectively sidelined. At least 600 sailors were earlier relocated after a fire broke out in a laundry area of the $13 billion carrier. The blaze was not combat-related, according to US officials.
