After a Scholar’s Awful Death, Mistaken Calls for Censorship - A Rush to Pin a Sad Death on the Media Aug. 17, 2026 nytimes.com/…pinion/jason-arday-cambridge-plagiar… By Michelle Goldberg Opinion Columnist Last year, Jack Grove, a reporter for Times Higher Education, a British magazine, was preparing an article about plagiarism allegations against the star academic Jason Arday. It would have been a big story because Arday, who in 2023 became Cambridge’s youngest-ever Black professor, was a minor celebrity, thanks in part to his seemingly extraordinary biography. Among other things, Arday said that he’d gotten his Ph.D. despite severe autism that left him nonverbal until he was 11 and unable to read until he was 18. He’d claimed to have run 600 miles in six days, which would have made him one of the world’s most accomplished ultramarathoners. Grove sent Arday three emails with questions about both his work and his history. Arday responded by hiring one of Britain’s leading defamation …More

"Probably the most compelling argument in support of our taking of independence was the recent history of Africa; we were living cheek by jowl with the results. For example, Ghana was the first British country to be granted independence in 1957, and the British government claimed that this glorious example would prove the success of Britain’s colonial policy. Within a couple of years their President Nkrumah had established a one party dictatorship, half of the Members of Parliament were imprisoned, the leaders of the opposition had been eliminated, the economy was in ruins, and the President had established an external multi-million-pound personal bank account. We could not know at the time that in the following year, 1966, he would be ousted and lucky to get out with his life. Next in line for independence was Nigeria, in 1960, and we were told that this was a mature country with links with Britain and Europe going back over 200 years. There were big religious and ethnic differences …More
Today, Leo XIV published a message for the 2026 World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. He adopts the ecological vocabulary closely associated with Francis’ pontificate. Citing Laudato Si’, he speaks of an “authentic ecological conversion” and in metaphors such as “the ecosystems of the human heart.” The message also contains a naïve statement on warfare. “The true tools for building peace are not weapons of destruction,” Leo writes, listing instead “truth, dialogue, patience, goodness, justice, mercy, understanding, care and love.” Leo XIV enfolds an earthly program of disarmament, poverty reduction and ecological improvement: “Let us imagine a world in which the energies currently invested in war are directed toward integral human development, to overcoming poverty, protecting human dignity and reconciling divided peoples. Such a vision reflects faith in the coming of God’s Kingdom.” #newsUadwzxlixo

"REFLECTION. — Whilst we contemplate, in profound sentiments of veneration, astonishment, and praise, the glory to which Mary is raised by her triumph on this day, we ought, for our own advantage, to consider by what means she arrived at this sublime degree of honor and happiness, that we may walk in her steps. No other way is open to us. The same path which conducted her to glory will also lead us thither; we shall be partners in her reward if we copy her virtues."
August 15 ~ THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY. ON this festival, the Church commemorates the happy departure from life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and her translation into the kingdom of her Son, in which she received from Him a crown of immortal glory, and a throne above all the other Saints and heavenly spirits. After Christ, as the triumphant Conqueror of death and hell, ascended into heaven, His blessed Mother remained at Jerusalem, persevering in prayer with the disciples, till, with them, she had received the Holy Ghost. She lived to a very advanced age, but finally paid the common debt of nature, none among the children of Adam being exempt from that rigorous law. But the death of the Saints is rather to be called a sweet sleep than death ; much more that of the Queen of Saints, who had been exempt from all sin. It is a traditionary pious belief, that the body of the Blessed Virgin was raised by God soon after her death, and taken up to glory, by a singular privilege, …More

Kendley was put up by the state and swore that he saw Mary Phagan on Forsyth street near the bridge, and that she was on her way to the factory. He said it was a few minutes after noon, but that he could not be positive. He was subjected to a grilling even more severe than given McCoy. After he had testified to seeing the girl he was turned over to the tender mercies of Mr. Rosser. Grilled by …More

Ezekiel 37:1-14 “I will give you rest in your land.” The Holy Spirit is rest. Let us now rest in the love of God. Matthew 22:34-40 “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “You shall love the Lord (…) You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.” But that’s not all. In other versions of the Gospels, Jesus and the young man say that something is missing. Let us learn to let ourselves be loved by God. This is the beginning. Biblical texts: NAB-RE Normand Thomas.

Much to admire about the Amish... unfortunately they have messed up theological notions of God. Like the Mormons, they appear 'devout' but woefully lacking in the faith. However, this should put us Catholics to shame - we have the Truth and often fail to live it out.
