During an October 17 interview on Twitch.tv, Archbishop Georg Gänswein was asked whether the more liberal German Church could learn from growing interest in Catholicism among young people in France and the US. The interviewer specifically mentioned the “Mass according to old rites” as a possible reason for success there. Gänswein did not directly address the old Mass. Instead, he said young people are “searching for answers” and finding “nourishment” in the Gospel and the Church’s message. He stressed that faith is not merely “something I have intellectually in my head.” What matters, he said, is a relationship with “the person who is essential to Christianity, namely Jesus Christ.”

Bishop Mark Beckman of Knoxville, Tennessee, has directed priests to discontinue the communal recitation of the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel immediately before or after Mass. In his October 16 article, he claims that in order to celebrate the liturgy “in accordance with the mind of the Church” priests need to “catechize the people of God as we move away from additional prayers recited together immediately before, during, and immediately after Mass.” Additional prayers - including those to St. Michael, St. Francis, and the Holy Spirit - should not become regular additions to the celebration of Mass. Returning young Catholics “want the traditional liturgy,” he said. While there is no question that the Novus Ordo is valid, the older rite “communicates more fully and more richly the divine action.” Burke expects “an ever greater number of Catholics” to worship as Catholics did “for over 15 centuries”. Looking to Leo XIV, Cardinal Burke urges Catholics to make their wishes known “to their bishops and to the Holy Father most of all,” while making clear they are not questioning Vatican II. He insists the Mass “was never suppressed and never could be.” Burke recalls a bishop with “no attraction” to the Roman rite nevertheless describing its adherents as “some of our most devout Catholics” and asking: “Why would I deny that to them?”

The Vatican press service announced today that Father Ignatius Ding Zuyao, 40, was consecrated Bishop of Haimen, in China's Jiangsu province. He is now the youngest bishop worldwide.
