VaticanNews.va has profiled Anna Medeossi, the first woman to serve as rector of a Catholic shrine. The Italian architect and consecrated virgin has served for nearly a year as rector of the Shrine of Notre-Dame de Santa Cruz in Oran, Algeria. She initially became involved with the shrine as an architect, working on its renovation. The shrine is visited primarily by Muslims.

First woman rector of a shrine: Witnessing to the Gospel through listening

[vaticannews] At the Rimini Meeting, we spoke with Anna Medeossi, who has been entrusted with the care of Notre-Dame de Santa Cruz in Oran, Algeria, about her story of encounter, faith, and listening.
By Eugenio Murrali and Andrea Tornielli - Rimini
Anna Medeossi has a lively and determined gaze, gentleness in her voice and gestures, and a wisdom that is both humble and profound.
An architect originally from the Italian city of Gorizia, she might never have imagined what life would call her to do nearly a year ago: become the first woman in the world to serve as rector of a shrine.
That distinction takes on even greater significance because of where the shrine is located: Notre-Dame de Santa Cruz in Oran, Algeria, an overwhelmingly Muslim country.
Images of the shrine she oversees were seen around the world on the occasion of the beatification of the Martyrs of Algeria.
From architecture to caring for the shrine
Her arrival at Santa Cruz—where she now also lives as a consecrated virgin …ច្រើន

Mother of Mercy Chapel in Columbus, Ohio, was already a beautiful Romanesque-style church, but later 20th-century alterations had diminished the coherence of its sanctuary. In 2025, William Heyer Architect replaced the small modern forward altar with a hand-carved wooden freestanding altar better suited to the character of the historic interior. The main intervention was the expansion of Rudolph Scheffler’s 1950s Christ the King apse mural. New saints and sacred symbols now occupy previously bare areas around the original composition.

Liturgical Arts Journal: Before and After: Mother of Mercy Chapel at St. Charles Preparatory School in Columbus, Ohio

Home » Architecture , Painting » Before and After: Mother of Mercy Chapel at St. Charles Preparatory School in Columbus, Ohio The firm of William Heyer Architect is located in Columbus, Ohio and in 2025 they were involved in a beautification project at the (already quite beautiful) Mother of Mercy Chapel located at the St. Charles Preparatory School in Columbus, Ohio. The chapel was already built around the substantial architectural bones of a Romanesque style architecture, with stone walls, columns with decorative capitals, an open-trussed timber ceiling, and an impressive apse featuring and image of Christ the King enthroned. Let's jump right into things with the 'before.' BEFORE Many of our 'before and afters' feature a parish that had either been stripped of its liturgical appointments and ornaments at some point, or some which never had them in the first place. In this instance, while we can certainly see some evidence of the later twentieth century modifications, the chapel …

SAUDI and its allies led the genocide in Yemen.
Learn some facts, and stop blaming Ansar’Allah! The death toll of the US-UK-Saudi-Emirati war on Yemen is estimated to be at least 377,000 individuals, as of the end of 2021.
-More than two-thirds of these Yemenis killed were likely children.
-These statistics come from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which reported in November that the number of deaths by direct and indirect causes in Yemen was projected to surpass 377,000 by the end of 2021.
-President Joe Biden claimed during his presidential campaign that he would end the war. In February 2021, the president announced that the United States would end support for “offensive” Saudi operations in Yemen – although by their very nature, all Saudi operations in Yemen are offensive, because the wealthy monarchy initiated the war by bombing its neighbor, the poorest country in West Asia.

Contemporary Dance Integrated into Assumption Liturgy in Mallorca

Worse than Germany: A contemporary dance and sound performance was incorporated into the celebration of the Solemnity of the Assumption at the Church of Sant Joan Baptista in Muro, Mallorca. It was entitled El Vol Màgic (“The Magic Flight”).
According to the Diocese of Mallorca, the work was “conceived specifically for the liturgical context of the celebration of the Assumption of the Mother of God.”
The project was directed by a musician and developed together with a dancer and choreographer, an organist, and a sound specialist.
According to the diocesan description, the project grew out of research into Mallorca’s traditional observances surrounding the Assumption and sought to explore the relationship between “sound, body, space and ritual.”

The Disease, the Cause and the Cure
Every day, Catholic writers publish another article warning us about what is going wrong in the Church. Synodality, conciliarism, liturgical abuses, doctrinal confusion — the list seems endless. Much of what they write is true, necessary and long overdue. But after reading so much of it, one question becomes increasingly difficult to avoid: are we going to keep describing the disease, or will someone finally dare to speak about its cause — and about the cure?

The Disease, the Cause and the Cure

Every day, Catholic writers publish another article warning us about what is going wrong in the Church. Synodality, conciliarism, liturgical abuses, doctrinal confusion — the list seems endless. Much of what they write is true, necessary and long overdue. But after reading so much of it, one question becomes increasingly difficult to avoid: are we going to keep describing the disease, or will someone finally dare to speak about its cause — and about the cure? Of course, modernist synodality is poison for the Church. It is the same evil spirit of Protestantism, but now in an even more progressive guise in this technically modern but spiritually rotten time in which we live. But is it enough to keep writing about how bad the disease is, instead of trying to eliminate its real cause? Indeed, there are more than enough writings about what even the birds in the trees already know. Writing about how synodalism, conciliarism — in fact, modernism as a whole — are grievously harmful to the Church …

War Against the Ancient Mass Is Destructive for the Church - Cardinal Sarah

When the generation of the ’68ers passes away, the unfounded, one-sided attitudes against Latin and Gregorian chant will pass away as well, Cardinal Robert Sarah told IlGiornale.it on August 27.
Benedict XVI’s liberalization of the Traditional Latin Mass had a positive and even corrective influence on abuses in the celebration of the Novus Ordo, Cardinal Sarah said.
“Many priests testify that discovering the Extraordinary Form helped them to celebrate better.”
Furthermore, the faithful could choose which form corresponded more closely to the fostering of the faith.
“But all of this was brought to an abrupt end by Traditionis Custodes while the Pope Emeritus was still alive.”
Francis’ restrictions on the Latin Mass were “neither a wise nor a respectful choice.”
Cardinal Sarah added that access to “ritual forms that have existed for centuries can never be artificially restricted by decrees.”
Without referring explicitly to the Novus Ordo, Sarah noted that a rite that did not serve the …ច្រើន

Israeli Settler Who Attacked French Catholic Nun Acquitted

The Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court has acquitted Yona Simcha Schreiber, 36, of criminal responsibility for a violent attack on a French Catholic nun in April.
The court accepted psychiatric evidence that he was psychotic at the time of the assault. He could neither understand the nature of his actions nor control them, the court ruled.
He was ordered to undergo compulsory psychiatric hospitalization for up to six years.
The attack occurred on Mount Zion, near King David’s Tomb outside Jerusalem’s Old City. Security footage showed Schreiber running toward the 48-year-old nun from behind and knocking her violently to the ground, causing her head to strike the stone pavement.
Schreiber initially walked away before returning and kicking the nun while she remained on the ground. He also assaulted a passerby who attempted to intervene.
The victim is a researcher at the Dominican-run École Biblique et Archéologique Française de Jérusalem.
Schreiber is a resident of Peduel, an illegal settlement …ច្រើន

Meet the first Jewish president of a Catholic university

Greg Weiner, president of Assumption University. Courtesy of Assumption University Synagogue president and Catholic university president aren’t typically jobs one holds concurrently. But in 2023, Greg Weiner became president of both Assumption University, a Catholic college in Worcester, Mass., and Congregation Beth Israel, a Conservative synagogue in the area. Weiner’s inauguration in March of that year made him the first Jewish president of a Catholic university — one with the motto “Until Christ be formed in you.” To him, the combination just made sense. “I never had any hesitation at all about whether being a Jewish president would work — quite the opposite,” Weiner told the Forward. “The divide in society between people who do and don’t treat religion seriously is much wider than between particular religions.” Shortly after Weiner’s inauguration, college presidents found themselves in the national spotlight as pro-Palestinian protesters built tent encampments on college campuses …

How Leo XIV Is Consolidating Francis’ Opening to Women in Vatican Leadership

Pope Francis broke with Vatican tradition by putting women into positions long reserved in practice for clerics. Leo XIV is now turning that breakthrough into routine.
In little more than a year, he has confirmed women appointed by his predecessor, promoted others and named numerous women to positions across the Vatican.
Italian media have noticed. They repeatedly reach for the colour pink: the Vatican “turns pink,” while headlines speak of a “Vaticano in rosa” and “nomine rosa” — “pink appointments.”
Here are the many women Leo XIV has appointed, promoted or confirmed so far.
Raffaella Petrini - Governor of Vatican City
Francis appointed Sister Raffaella Petrini president of the Governorate of Vatican City State and president of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State shortly before his death.
Leo XIV did more than simply leave her there. In November 2025, he modified Vatican City’s Fundamental Law so that the presidency of the Pontifical Commission no longer had to be held by …ច្រើន

The Immaculate Heart as the Model of Contemplative Life | The Fatima Center

Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is inseparable from the Message of Fatima. Our Lady showed the shepherd children Her Heart surrounded by thorns,[1] asked for reparation for the sins committed against It,[2] and promised that Her Immaculate Heart would ultimately triumph.[3] Yet this devotion also reveals the hidden interior life of the Mother of God. Her Heart is the most perfect created model of prayer, recollection, and contemplation. Sacred Scripture records relatively few words spoken by Our Lady. Instead, the Gospel repeatedly directs our attention to Her silence. After the shepherds came to Bethlehem and related the message they had received from the angels, St. Luke writes: “But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in Her heart” (Luke 2:19). Following the finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple, the Evangelist again observes: “And His mother kept all these words in Her heart” (Luke 2:51). In these brief passages, we are permitted to glimpse the interior life of the …

Purity

"Free from all uncleanness, perfect and altogether without spot."
— Denis (Pseudo-Dionysius), On the Divine Names, Chapter 12
"In these words three degrees of cleanness are described which are requisite for sanctity. And the first is the freedom from all uncleanness. Now freedom is the opposite of slavery. But the slave of uncleanness is he who is completely conquered by uncleanness and subject to it. The first grade of purity then is that one should be delivered from the slavery of impurity. Now the second degree is that the purity should be perfect, for the perfect is that to which nothing is lacking. It happens at times that one is not subject to uncleanness, but there is wanting to him something of purity, in so far as he is troubled by passions of uncleanness; and when these are taken away there is perfect purity. The third degree of purity is that one should be altogether without spot. For that is said to be spotted which is not stained by anything intrinsic, but by something …ច្រើន

Two pastors in South Korea have been fined 1 million won (about €620) each after loudly preaching on a domestic flight from Jeju to Seoul. They shouted that passengers would “go to hell” if they did not believe in Jesus, while one moved around the cabin. They continued despite instructions from the cabin crew to stop. A Seoul court found that their conduct constituted a disturbance under South Korea’s Aviation Security Act.

The court said the 64-year-old pastor stood in the aisle despite repeated attempts by crew members to stop him and shouted at passengers, “You will go to hell if you don’t believe in Jesus.”

Two pastors fined W1m each for disrupting flight with loud preaching - The Korea Herald

This unrelated file photo shows the interior of an airplane. (Getty Images Bank) Two pastors were fined 1 million won ($723) each for disrupting a domestic flight by loudly preaching to passengers and refusing repeated requests from cabin crew to stop, local media reported Monday. The pastors, 64 and 68, were convicted of violating the Aviation Security Act over an incident aboard a flight from Jeju to Gimpo that departed at around 3:40 p.m. on March 12, according to the Seoul Southern District Court's Aug. 18 ruling. The court said the 64-year-old pastor stood in the aisle despite repeated attempts by crew members to stop him and shouted at passengers, “You will go to hell if you don’t believe in Jesus.” The other pastor joined in, shouting, "Hallelujah, you will go to hell" while walking up and down the aisle. When a crew member approached to issue a warning, the pastors reportedly shouted back, "Don't try to lecture me." The two ignored repeated complaints and objections from crew …
