Today in Paris, Pope Leo XIV linked France’s revolutionary motto - “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” [or death] - with the Gospel. Speaking to French civil authorities at the Élysée Palace, Leo XIV called the three principles “universal ethical imperatives” that “find in the Gospel message an inexhaustible source of inspiration and fulfillment.” The motto stems from the demonic French Revolution, which unleashed severe persecution of the Catholic Church. During the revolutionary period, clergy and religious were executed, imprisoned, deported or forced into exile, while churches and religious institutions were suppressed.

Even in “the most vulnerable circumstances, even to death itself,” human dignity remains undiminished. The sick, suffering and dying, he said, must receive “loving care at every stage of life.”
